John, the candy man, moved Philip’s Candy Shop from Surf Avenue in Coney Island to its current location at 8 Barrett Avenue in 2002. The shop, originally established in 1930, had to relocate due to the construction of the Stillwell Avenue subway stop.
It was one of the first places where my wife and I had our first dates back in 2010. I couldn’t believe this place existed – it was a hidden gem! Stepping inside felt like traveling back in time. It’s one of those classic mom-and-pop shops with stainless steel appliances, an old-fashioned cash register, and even homemade chocolates!
Now, it’s one of the places where I make memories with my son every Saturday for his special treats, especially ring pops. Maria, the owner, adores him; she even lets him come around the counter to pick out his favorite colored lollipop himself. He absolutely loves coming here!
This place holds a truly special place in my heart.
