The End of an Era: The Antenna King

The Antenna King, once a towering figure in the skyline under the shadow of the Gowanus Expressway, used to rule the rooftops of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. The legacy began in 1967 when the owner opened a TV repair shop in Sunset Park, eventually founding The Antenna King.

But times have changed. With the rise of streaming services and internet usage, antennas are becoming more obsolete than ever.

This building holds fond memories from my early childhood. During car trips from Manhattan to Staten Island in my father’s old Buick Skylark, I’d catch glimpses of it from the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

Back then, evenings were spent glued to the TV, watching classic shows like The Honeymooners, Star Trek, and The Twilight Zone. Fiddling with the antenna to get the best reception was a familiar ritual of childhood.

The slogan, “What the King Installs, Never Falls!” might not hold true anymore, but The Antenna King stands as a testament to a bygone era of television and the importance of local businesses in our communities.
