An enchanting encounter! The charm of this storefront, nestled in the heart of Stapleton –a historical district in Staten Island, New York– caught my eye instantly. Residing close by allowed me to embrace its authentic African inspired ambiance daily; characterized by time-worn posters and meticulously handcrafted sign-age.
Unfortunately, numerous modest-sized retail businesses are closing amidst looming corporate takeovers throughout the area. Despite paucity of funds coupled with pressures associated with ongoing development activities threatening these institutions’ existence, I felt motivated to perpetuate memories tied to such pivotal African-American landmarks.
To craft a likeness of this exceptional storefront, I relied on detailed photographs taken personally over time. This labor-intensive process entailed re-creating each poster and sign attributed to the store with absolute precision.
